Apgar method

Apgar a method (the American anesthesiologist of V. Apgar, 1909-1974) – a way which is applied to definition for the first minutes of life of a condition of the newborn; Virginia Apgar developed system for more convenient storing of indicators where to each letter of its surname – APGAR corresponded one of characteristics:

  • A (appearance) – skin color;
  • Р (puls) – pulse;
  • G (grimace) - grimaces;
  • A (activity) – activity, mobility, a tone of muscles;
  • R (respiration) - respiratory functions, reflex irritability.

Each of criteria is estimated in points by integers from 0 to 2, the general result of assessment of a condition of the newborn can be from 0 to 10.
