Potassium sulfate

Potassium sulfate is inorganic compound with a chemical formula K2SO4.Сульфат калия - заменитель соли

As nutritional supplement potassium sulfate has the name E515 and concerns to group of emulsifiers which are necessary for creation of homogeneous mix from immiscible components in the nature, for example, of water with oil or waters with fat. Also E515 is applied by industrial production of products to acidity regulation.

Potassium sulfate is rigid and bitter salt with very high temperature of melting (about 1078 °C). It represents colourless rhombic crystals, easily soluble in water.

Receiving potassium sulfate

Potassium sulfate as chemical compound was known since the beginning of the 14th century thanks to chemists Boyle, Glauber and Takheus.

In the nature potassium sulfate meets on fields of potassium salts. Besides, it is present at waters of salty lakes, however, in most cases, with various impurity. Pure potassium sulfate is in the nature rather seldom. Its most known natural source is mineral arcanite in the form of white or transparent crystals which meets in California (USA).

Receiving potassium sulfate is possible from the natural minerals supporting him. The shoenite, kainite, leonite, syngenite concern to them, glazerit, langbeinite and polyhalite.

In laboratory practice for receiving potassium sulfate use reactions with potassium oxide, with weak or unstable acids and some other.

Properties of potassium sulfate

Potassium sulfate is necessary connection for an organism as he participates in process of delivery of oxygen to cells.

Shortage of potassium sulfate is reflected not only in a condition of skin and a hair, but also in the general tone of an organism that is shown as bystry fatigue.

In products potassium sulfate contains in a laminaria, spinach, cheese, beet, low-fat beef, bananas, a citrus (lemons and oranges), almonds.

Potassium sulfate as chemical compound is unsafe for an organism in cases:

  • At hit in eyes and on skin – perhaps mechanical irritation;
  • At a proglatyvaniye of a large amount of potassium sulfate – the irritation of digestive tract is possible;
  • At connection inhalation – the irritation of respiratory tracts is possible.

Use of potassium sulfate in the food industry

By industrial production of food stuffs potassium sulfate as E515 additive is most often used as salt substitute, and also:Одно из применений сульфата калия - удобрение для растений

  • As a medium at preparation of rye ferments and yeast of a liquid consistence;
  • As the acidity regulator in drinks;
  • As power supply minerals.

Potassium sulfate in moderate quantities is useful to an organism. However its excessive quantity can lead to a gastric disturbance, irritation of all digestive tract, and in certain cases – to organism poisoning.

Potassium sulfate use

Potassium sulfate is widely applied in agriculture in the form of non-chlorine fertilizer. Efficiency of solution of potassium sulfate is highest on sod-podzolic and peat soils which are poor in potassium. Also it is used as an alternative to fertilizers about the content of chlorine for cultivation of tobacco, potatoes, grapes, flax, a citrus.

On chernozem soils solution of potassium sulfate will be applied, as a rule, under the cultures acquiring a lot of sodium and potassium among which there is sunflower, sugar beet, fruit, various root crops and vegetables.

Potassium sulfate solution in combination with nitrogen and phosphoric fertilizers is most effective.

Also potassium sulfate is applied:

  • In pharmacology – as raw materials for production of dietary supplements;
  • In glass production.
