Poisoning with strontium salts

Metal strontium was discovered rather usually – it was found in composition of mineral which was found towards the end of the 18th century. Found mineral in the Scottish village with the name Stronshian therefore mineral was called strontianite. 30 years later in the found mineral scientists found new metal, and in 1808 the English physicist and the chemist Hemfri Davy managed to emit strontium in pure form.

Strontium represents silver-white, plastic and soft metal. Thanks to the activity strontium enters chemical changes quickly. Nevertheless, in pure form it does not meet in the nature – this metal is as a part of minerals, as a rule, with calcium. In total minerals which contain strontium to specialists it is known not less than 40. At the same time most of them have no industrial value.

Strontium compounds, as well as metal, are used in the various fields of science and the industry: in metallurgy, radio electronics, medicine, the food industry. By the way, strontium in pyrotechnics was applied even then when as a separate element it was not known yet: strontium compounds allowed to form fires of red color. Actually, salutes and fireworks practically all first half of the 20th century became the main scope of it threw.

Strontium - Sr90 is applied in medicine to implementation of radiation therapy at erosion, at tumors, at other defeats of bodies and fabrics. However, such method is applicable only to those centers which arrangement superficial – in mucous membranes, in skin.

Reasons of poisoning with strontium salts:

The oxide or hydroxide of strontium in mix with a strontium carbonate (or without it) are sometimes in addition applied in production of sugar, and also in the glass industry; in aqueous solution possess alkali reaction.

Chloride, bromide, chlorate, nitrate of strontium are etc. used in pyrotechnics when receiving "Bengal light".

Sulfide of strontium is a part of the shining weight and depilators; it is poisonous.

Strontium sulfate — painting paint (the main component of strontium white), in connection with chromate of strontium forms strontium yellow.

Symptoms of poisoning with strontium salts:

Intake of salts of strontium in general is harmless as there is no little considerable enteral resorption. Effect of anion is in exceptional cases essential. The strontium entered parenterally is quickly removed through kidneys, a small part is postponed in bones (like calcium; important at radioactive substance). In extreme cases influence on a myocardium, muscles of vessels and bronchial tubes, and also influence of anions is possible.
Children are subject to development of strontic rickets because of sharp reduction of content of calcium in bones. Traditional treatment by drugs with calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus at such disease is without result.

At hit of radioactive strontium compounds in an organism with air, changes, and pathological, happen in lungs: there is fibrosis – at this disease interalveolar partitions in lungs are thickened. Therefore breath at patients becomes speeded up and superficial, frequent cough, an asthma, heart failure, bronchitis develops. Can be surprised, including, and skin.

Treatment of poisoning with strontium salts:

After intake in exceptional cases appoint a purgative, for example sodium sulfate (2 tablespoons to 1/4 l of warm water).

In an appropriate case carry out a symptomatic treatment with observance of instructions in the sections I—III. To interfere with formation of radioactive materials in bones, appoint parathormone, паратгорм (Е) or Dihydrotachysterolum (M), антитетанин (Е), Tachidonum (C), Tachystinum (G), AT 10(E).

In extreme cases the hemodialysis can be required. At corrosive burns (an eye, mucous membranes) a hydroxide of strontium it is necessary to begin as soon as possible washing with a large amount of the water (sweetened) or to give help, as at a corrosive burn lime.
