Represents the transparent crystal powder which is turning yellow when heating. Meets in the nature in three variations: in the form of the minerals of anatase, rutile and brookite having various crystal structure. For receiving substance only titanium dioxide with structure of anatase and rutile is used.

Titanium dioxide food is allowed for use in the industry since 1994 as dye for giving to food stuffs of the bleaching effect.

In a commodity form titanium dioxide usually is pure substance at which there is an insignificant amount of the impurity of silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide improving technological effectiveness of a product.

In the food industry titanium dioxide is used as the E171 nutritional supplement applied to production of bystry breakfasts, powdered milk, powdery products. By means of dioxide of titanium crabsticks and other analogs of fish products, chewing gums, mayonnaise are bleached, and also glaze, white chocolate, candies, etc. are clarified.

In production of pelmeni titanium dioxide is applied to flour clarification. The dosage of E171 is selected depending on a necessary whiteness of the test. At the same time the required amount of dye is brought in weight together with flour and carefully mixes up for the maximum distribution of substance. Laying of titanium dioxide makes 100-200 grams on 100 kg of flour.

In the meat-processing industry titanium dioxide to which properties good dispersancy (emulsification) and optical attractiveness belong is used for whitening of salted pork fat, pastes and delicious products.

Titanium dioxide and in production of vegetable canned food, in particular for clarification of grated horse-radish is applied.

Harm of titanium dioxide

According to data, titanium dioxide is not dissolved in a gastric juice and is practically not soaked up by an organism through intestines walls. Thus, dioxide of titanium does not collect in fabrics, being completely brought out of an organism.

The SanPiN 2.3.2.1293-03 allows producers of the products eaten to use titanium dioxide in volumes which from the point of view of producers allow them to achieve necessary technological effect.

However, the assumption of potential harm of titanium dioxide nevertheless is available: as showed researches on rats, inhalation of powder of dioxide of titanium increases probability of developing of cancer diseases, being cancerogenic and for the person.

Some scientists assume that nanoparticles of substance are capable to destroy an organism at the cellular level, destroying their natural structure, however exact confirmations to this fact, except tests on rodents, is not available.

In spite of the fact that the titanium dioxide applied in foodstuff is considered harmless, studying of its influence on an organism proceed. It is not desirable to exceed the recommended dosage of food titanium dioxide (1% a day) to people with weak immunity.
