Hemothorax

Hemothorax (haemothorax; Greek haima – blood + Greek thorax – a thorax, a breast; synonym: гематоторакс) – existence in a pleural cavity of the accumulated blood.

Types of a hemothorax:

  • apical (apicalis) – a limited hemothorax in a top zone (an upper part) of a lung;
  • small (minor) – at which in a pleural cavity the level of blood does not reach a shovel corner;
  • interlobar (interlobaris) – the limited hemothorax which is localized in interlobar cracks;
  • epiphrenic (supradiaphragmaticus) – the limited hemothorax which is in adjacent to a diaphragm, a zone of a pleural cavity;
  • limited (circumscriptus: synonym: the hemothorax sacculated) – separated by commissures, located in the small site of a pleural cavity;
  • parakostalny (paracostalis) – a limited hemothorax in area of a pleural cavity, adjacent to edges;
  • paramediastinal (paramediastinalis; a Greek raga – near + anatomic mediastinum – a mediastinum) – the limited hemothorax located in the site of a pleural cavity adjacent to a mediastinum;
  • curtailed (concretus) – characterized by coagulation of the streamed blood;
  • average (medius) – at which in a pleural cavity the level of blood reaches a shovel corner;
  • total (totalis; synonym: a hemothorax big) – at which all or almost all pleural cavity is filled with blood.
