Astigmatism

Description:

Astigmatism — the visual impairment connected with disturbance of a form of a crystalline lens or cornea therefore the person loses ability to accurate vision. Defect is compensated by optical lenses of spherical shape not completely. In certain cases leads to full loss of sight. If an astigmatism not to treat, it can lead to squint and sharp falling of sight. Without correction the astigmatism can cause headaches and gripes in eyes. Therefore it is very important to visit the ophthalmologist regularly.

Astigmatism symptoms:

Is one of kinds of ametropias.

At an astigmatism disturbance of uniform curvature of a cornea of an eye and/or a crystalline lens leads to sight distortion. Light beams do not agree in one point on a retina as it occurs in a normal eye, as a result on a retina the image of a point in the form of an indistinct ellipse, a piece or "eight" forms. In certain cases the image of vertical lines can seem indistinct, in others horizontal or diagonal lines will come to light out of a focusing zone. The astigmatism often develops at early age (usually together with far-sightedness or short-sightedness) and is usually created after the first years of life.

Symptoms of an astigmatism is decrease in sight, sometimes vision of objects bent, their bifurcation, bystry exhaustion of eyes during the work, a headache. At one of ways final confirmation is received after expansion of pupils solution of atropine and carrying out a skiaskopiya (shadow test).

Astigmatism reasons:

The astigmatism arises owing to the irregular (not spheric) shape of a cornea (more rare — a crystalline lens).

Treatment of the Astigmatism:

Constant glasses wearing with astigmatic lenses. The modern optics allows to use contact lenses. Surgical treatment is applied according to the recommendation of the oculist. Such operation can be performed if there are no pathologies of a retina of an eye, hems on a surface of an eyeglobe or other problems with eyes. The Nedokorrigirovanny astigmatism in the childhood can lead to an amblyopia (a "lazy" eye) when without the visible anatomic reason at the patient the low sight which is not giving in to correction.
