Aerophagia

Description:

Aerophagia (aerophagia; Greek azr air + phagein to eat, absorb) — swallowing excess amount of air and the subsequent its regurgitation.
It is necessary to distinguish the physiological swallowing a quantity of air (to these is regulated intragastric pressure) which is not followed by an eructation and also an eructation owing to bystry filling of a stomach from an aerophagia gas at drink of sparkling water, beer or after reception of baking soda.

Aerophagia symptoms:

The diagnosis of an aerophagia is established on the basis of the anamnesis and data of an objective research. Quite often typical eructation arises during medical examination, and the doctor can see preparation for swallowing air: the patient extends the head forward, presses a chin to a breast and makes the empty deglutitory movements. Perkutorno is defined expanded space of Traube. At X-ray inspection reveal high standing of an upper dome of a diaphragm at the expense of a big air bubble of a stomach and plentiful accumulation of gases in intestines; quite often find the functional cascade of a stomach.
At a neurotic aerophagia swallowing air often happens also out of process of meal. Patients complain on frequent empty and loud, sometimes an inodorous "multi-storey" eructation which at patients with hysteria in some cases is followed by loud screaming. The eructation is observed both after food, and in any other time, sometimes it almost constant and disappears only during sleep. At expressed And. patients are disturbed by heavy feelings, a raspiraniye in pancreatic area, quite often swellings of all stomach. In some cases there is a gastrocardial syndrome: premature ventricular contraction, sometimes stenocardia (is more often at the persons having coronary heart disease). More rare at And. the breath difficulty designated earlier as asthma dyspepticum is observed.
The aerophagia at children is observed most often at chest age at suction of an empty pacifier or a low-milk breast, and the expressed aerophagia sometimes can become the reason of heavy frustration of the food which is followed by persistent vomiting and the progressing falling of weight. Aerophagia signs at babies are shout during food, bystry abdominal distention and refusal of food. At a postural change, and sometimes and independently the child has an eructation air then he calms down and starts over again sucking. The diagnosis can be confirmed radiological. At some children the proglatyvaniye of air is a habit to which it is possible to disaccustom, strictly regulating meal, and sometimes even applying feeding via the probe. In most cases the aerophagia is connected with an underdevelopment of the device of nervous control of digestive organs and passes with age.

Aerophagia reasons:

The aerophagia is observed at violation of the rules of meal (bystry food, a talk during food), owing to a respiratory disease (at the complicated nasal breath) or the digestive device (especially diseases of teeth, an oral cavity), but as the steady, requiring special attention pathological phenomenon of an aerophagia most often represents a pathological conditioned reflex — display of neurosis.

Treatment of the Aerophagia:

Treatment is directed to a basic disease; at a neurotic aerophagia of the patient needs consultation and the medical help of a prikhoterapevt (sometimes the psychiatrist). Besides, the patient is recommended to spit out, but not to swallow saliva, to slowly eat food, not to talk during food. Appoint a diet with an exception of the drinks containing carbonic acid. Systematic respiratory gymnastics, exercises are reasonable.
