Psychasthenia (from other - Greek ψυχή — soul and — powerlessness, weakness) — the mental disorder at the moment classified as neurosis.
The psychasthenia in translation from Greek means "sincere weakness" (unlike a neurasthenia - "nervous weakness").
Patients complain of what surrounding is perceived by them "dreamily", own actions, decisions, acts seem insufficiently clear and exact. From here - constant bent to doubts, indecision, uncertainty, alarming and hypochondriac mood, shyness, the increased shyness.
Owing to constant doubts in correctness made the person often aims to redo just finished business. All this combined creates burdensome feeling of own inferiority at the patient. Fictional trouble not less, and, maybe, is more terrible, than existing.
Patients with a psychasthenia often indulge in various reflections of abstract character; mentally in the dreams they are capable to endure a lot of things, but from participation in reality take great pain to evade. The so-called professional lack of will (abulia) of patients with a psychasthenia which is shown first of all at work when performing the direct duties when the person with psychasthenic frustration often begins to have doubts and to show indecision is described. Quite often at a psychasthenia various hypochiondrial and persuasive states develop.
Psychasthenic traits of character, as well as many other neurotic disturbances, can be shown already at young age. However the separate and softly expressed manifestations do not give yet the grounds to speak about a psychasthenia as about a disease. If they under the influence of psikhogenno the injuring circumstances accrue, become complicated, become predominating in mental activity of the person, there are bases to speak not about a character originality, and about the disease neurotic state preventing the person to live and work.
Psychasthenic frustration during a disease have usually constant character, but in the beginning the patient copes with them. If the injuring circumstances remain and amplify, and there is no systematic treatment, displays of a disease can accrue.
It develops preferential at people with "cogitative" type of mental activity and is as if opposite to hysteria.
