At a subtotal pancreatectomy (subtotal pancreatectomy) the most part of a pancreas is removed; only its small site located near a duodenum is usually left. In case of a pancreatectomy (partial pancreatectomy) only its small part is removed. This operation is carried out in the presence of tumors of a pancreas or chronic or recurrent pancreatitis.
