Thoracotomy (from other - Greek — a breast and τομή — a section, a section) — the surgery consisting in opening of a thorax through a chest wall for inspection of contents of a pleural cavity or performance of surgical interventions on the lungs, heart or other bodies located in a thorax. Is among the thoracic accesses in thoracic surgery providing penetration to bodies of a thorax through a chest wall (unlike the extra thoracic and combined accesses).
