Xylomethazolinum

Xylomethazolinum – the vasoconstrictor of local action applied in the LOR-expert.

Form of release and structure

• Spray of nasal 0,05% and 0,1%: the colourless or slightly painted liquid with a characteristic smell of eucalyptus oil (in the bottles equipped with the sprayer on 10 or 20 ml, 1 bottle in a pack cardboard);
• Drops nasal 0,05% and 0,1%: transparent, with a subtle yellowish shade or colourless solution (in polymeric bottles or polymeric bottles with the doser on 10, 15 or 25 ml, in a pack a cardboard 1 bottle).

Active ingredient: xylomethazolinum a hydrochloride, in 1 ml of spray and 1 ml of drops – 0,5 or 1 mg.

Spray excipients: dinatrium of an edetat a dihydrate, hydrophosphate sodium dodecahydrate, sorbitol, глицерол, a macrogoal глицерилгидроксистеарат, potassium dihydrophosphate, sodium chloride, the water purified a benzalkoniya chloride, eucalyptus oil.

Excipients of drops: sodium chloride, dinatrium эдетат, sodium hydrophosphate, potassium dihydrophosphate, the purified water, a benzalkoniya chloride.

Indications to use

• The Acute Respiratory Diseases (ARD) which are followed by the rhinitis phenomena;
• Acute allergic rhinitis, pollinosis, sinusitis;
• Average otitis (for reduction of hypostasis of a mucous membrane of a nasopharynx, it is applied as a part of complex therapy).

Also Xylomethazolinum is applied to training of patients for diagnostic manipulations (rinoskopiya).

Contraindications

Absolute:

• The expressed atherosclerosis;
• Glaucoma;
• Thyrotoxicosis;
• Tachycardia;
• Arterial hypertension;
• Surgical interventions on a meninx in the anamnesis;
• Atrophic rhinitis;
• Simultaneous use with tricyclic antidepressants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors;
• Children's age up to 2 years (for spray), up to 6 years (for drops and spray of 0,1%).

Relative (diseases/states at which Xylomethazolinum should be applied with extra care in connection with the available risk of development of complications):

• Coronary heart disease (stenocardia of the III-IV functional class);
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Prostate adenoma;
• Pregnancy;
• Children's age up to 2 years (for drops of 0,05%);
• Lactation.

Route of administration and dosage

Xylomethazolinum intranazalno is applied. It is previously necessary to clear the nasal courses.

The recommended dosing modes:

• Adults and children are more senior than 6 years: on 1 injection of 0,1% of spray or on 2-3 drops of 0,1% of solution in each nasal course 2-3 times a day (for spray), to 4 times (for drops);
• Children of 2-6 years: on 1 injection of 0,05% of spray or on 1-2 drops of 0,05% of solution in each nostril 1-2 times a day;
• Children up to 2 years (with care): on 1-2 drops of 0,05% of solution 1-2 times a day.

Frequency rate of use – no more than 3 times a day.

Duration of treatment of rhinitis – 5-7 days.

Side effects

At frequent and/or prolonged use of Xylomethazolinum the following side effects are possible: slime hypersecretion, burning, dryness and/or irritation of a mucous membrane of a nasopharynx, sneezing, paresthesias (feelings of numbness, crawling of goosebumps, feelings of a pricking).

Are in rare instances noted: hypostasis of a mucous membrane of a nasal cavity, tachycardia, sleeplessness, tachycardia, increase in arterial pressure, a headache, arrhythmias, vision disorders, vomiting, a depression (at prolonged use in high doses).

Special instructions

It is not necessary to use drug more than 7 days.

Usually Xylomethazolinum does not exert a negative impact on the speed of reactions and attention. However in certain cases at frequent and/or prolonged use development of side reactions which break ability to drive the car and to work with difficult mechanisms is possible.

At the admission of a dose drug can be used only if there passed no more than 1 hour, otherwise it is necessary to wait for time of the following dose. It is impossible to double a dose.

Medicinal interaction

It is contraindicated to apply xylomethazolinum along with tricyclic antidepressants, and also monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Terms and storage conditions

To store at a temperature up to 25 ºС in the place protected from light unavailable to children. Not to freeze.

Period of validity – 3 years.
