Helmholtz theory of hearing

Helmholtz theory of hearing (N. of L. F. Helmholtz, German physicist and physiologist, 1821-1894; synonym: Helmholtz the resonator theory) – the theory according to which the analysis of sounds on height is explained by the fact that the sounding tone causes the sokolebatelny movements on the principle of a resonance only in those fibers of a basal membrane of a snail which tension and length determine the corresponding frequency of their own fluctuations.
