Atkins's diet is developed by the cardiologist Robert Atkins in the 70th years of the 20th century. On this diet show business stars – Jennifer Lopez, Catherine Zeta Jones and Jennifer Aniston grew thin.

Developing a diet, Atkins was based on natural processes of a metabolism: at decrease in amount of carbohydrates in a diet the organism is forced to spend fatty stocks (ketosis).

The diet of doctor Atkins consists of four phases:

The first phase – the induction, starting process ketose. It is the main stage of a diet which duration makes 14 days. Loss of weight – 2-6 kg a week.

Principles of the first phase:

  • Fats and carbohydrates are used in moderate quantity, and amount of carbohydrates in day - no more than 20 g;
  • The number of meals - 3-5 in day with intervals no more than 6 hours;
  • In day not less than 8 glasses of pure still water are drunk;
  • At emergence of locks the amount of vegetable food in a diet increases and biological additives with fibers are accepted.

The second phase – further weight reduction. Duration of this phase for each growing thin is individual and makes from two weeks to several years. It lasts till the moment when there are 3-5 extra kilos. In the second phase loss of weight makes 500 g a week. The organism gets used to a ketosis and continues to split fats.

Principles of the second phase:

  • The use of carbohydrates increases every week by 5 g until until weight stops being lost. If reduction of weight stopped too quickly, return to the previous amount of carbohydrates in a diet;
  • A variety of the menu increases.

The third phase – transitional to preservation of weight. It begins with the moment of achievement of the necessary weight. The purpose of this phase – to define balance between amount of food and requirements of an organism, to pick up the corresponding diet.

Principles of the third phase:

  • Gradually the amount of carbohydrates in a diet increases by 10 g a week. If weight grows, return to the previous amount of carbohydrates;
  • You watch result of the use of again entered products;
  • Give preference to proteinaceous food and products with moderate amount of fat.

The fourth phase – preservation of weight. This phase ideally proceeds all life.

Principles of the fourth phase:

  • To adhere to an individual critical level of the use of carbohydrates for deduction of weight;
  • Not to allow set more than three extra kilos;
  • Not to forget about regular exercise stresses.

Diet advantages

Atkins's diet is individual: weight loss goes gradually, and the person learns to control appetite, to select the products suitable it and to define critically tolerance level of carbohydrates.

Shortcomings and contraindications

Atkins's diet is suitable only for healthy people. The official medicine belongs to this power supply system ambiguously as the long ketosis can lead to acidulation of body tissues, an exacerbation of chronic diseases and even a coma.

What products are resolved?

The list of the resolved products depends on a diet phase.

First phase:

  • Meat, bird, fish;
  • Seafood: lobsters, shrimps, crabs, oysters;
  • Cheeses, eggs (boiled, fried, baked);
  • Vegetables and greens (2-3 cups a day): the celery, paprika, a sorrel, a garden radish, parsley and fennel, a garden cress, endive, salad an escarol, chicory, cucumbers are preferable; artichokes, turnip, tomatoes, carrots, kohlrabi cabbage, a color and Brussels sprout, broccoli cabbage, eggplants, pumpkin, onion, leek, spinach, green bean, an asparagus are admissible;
  • Seasonings: thyme, rosemary, ginger, black and red siliculose pepper, garlic, basil;
  • Liquid food: broth, herbal teas, coffee, black and green tea, lemon juice;
  • Oils and fats: sunflower oil, sesame, grape and soy.

Second phase. It is possible to add to products of the first phase (norm per day):

  • Heavy cream (half-cups);
  • Vegetables: avocado (half);
  • Nuts and seeds: cashew (9 pieces), roasted peanuts (26 pieces), crude seeds of sunflower (3 tablespoons), pecans (31 pieces), almonds (24 pieces), walnuts (14 halves);
  • Fruit and berries: melon (3/4 cups), strawberry (half-cups), raspberry (1/4 cups), blueberry (half-cups);
  • Juice: tomato juice (100 ml).

Third phase. The following is added to earlier resolved products (norm per day):

  • Vegetables: carrots (half-cups), split peas (half-cups), beet (half-cups), potatoes (half-cups);
  • Fruit: apple (half), mango (third), banana (third), plum (1 piece), water-melon (cup), kiwi (1 piece), grapes (12 berries), peach (1 piece), cherry (12 berries);
  • Bean: haricot (1/4 cups), lentil (1/4 cups);
  • Grain: rice, oats, barley (1/4 cups).

 Nuts and seeds in the following quantities are resolved: almonds and pine nuts (half-cups), roasted peanuts and seeds of sunflower (50 g), black fox and walnuts (3/4 cups), sesame (1/3 cups), cashew (1/4 cups).

What products are prohibited?

In the first phase of a diet of Atkins it is forbidden to use the bread and flour products, vegetables containing starch, nuts and sunflower seeds, sugar.

In the subsequent phases of a diet the list of the prohibited products is formed individually for each growing thin. If the product causes a set of weight, increase in appetite or a delay of liquid in a body (hypostases), exclude it from a diet.

Menu

As the list of the products resolved on this diet is extensive, the menu is formed randomly taking into account the principles of a diet.

Example of the menu of a diet of Atkins (2-3 phase):

Breakfast

Option 1: low-fat cottage cheese (yogurt) and tea.

Option 2: fried eggs with bacon and green tea.

Lunch

Option 1: boiled fish (150 g) with a garnish from rice, tea.

Option 2: fish soup, slice of rye bread, tomato, orange, tea.

Option 3: the baked veal (100 g), a garnish from wild rice, cucumbers salad, tea.

Option 4: cheese piece, one cutlet.

Dinner

Option 1: the baked chicken (250 g), seafood salad, grapefruit.

Option 2: the baked fish (150 g), vegetables and eggs salad.

Option 3: boiled veal (200 g), cauliflower stewed.

Option 4: broth, beef liver, vegetables salad, tea.

Useful tips

Council 1: At observance of a diet of Atkins it is desirable to accept a vitamin and mineral complex.

Council 2: To avoid problems with health, lose weight gradually.

Council 3: In the list of products volume is specified in cups. It means that vegetables, greens or fruit are crushed crude or after cooking, and then the required portion is selected.
