Southern to a putass lives in more thickly waters, eats zooplankton, caviar and whitebaits of other species of fish. This fish reaches a full maturity in three years and breeds at a depth of 300 meters at the water temperature of 10 degrees.

Both look to a putass are a food fish who is caught in the spring and in the fall. This fish is most often used in fishing industry of Europe in recent years. In 2007 on catch volume among food fishes to a putass took the fifth place. Annually catches about 1,5 million tons of this fish.

In fishing industry from a putassa create semi-finished products and natural canned food. Most often this fish is used as a forage for domestic animals.
