Bivalent

Bivalent (bi-from armor. bis – twice + lat. valens, valentis – strong) – the structure containing two homologous chromosomes of a diploid organism which combine (conjugate) in the course of meiotic division of a cell (meiosis).

Allocate a bivalent:

  • Asymmetric – consisting of chromosomes of identical length, but with various placement a centromere;
  • Unequal – having chromosomes of different length;
  • Heteromorphic – the general name of bivalents unequal and asymmetric.
