Postinor

Postinor – a post-coital oral contraceptive.

Form of release and structure

Dosage form – tablets: in the form of a disk, almost white or white color, with a facet, on one of the parties – a circular engraving "INOR^." (on 2 pieces in blisters, 1 blister in a pack cardboard).

Active agent: levonorgestrel, in 1 tablet – 0,75 mg.

Auxiliary components: silicon dioxide colloid, magnesium stearate, potato starch, starch corn, talc, lactoses monohydrate.

Indications to use

Postinor – the drug used for the emergency (post-coital) contraception (after the unprotected sexual intercourse or sexual contact with use of an unreliable method of contraception).

Contraindications

Absolute:

• Heavy liver failure;
• Deficit of lactase, lactose intolerance, glyukozo-galaktozny malabsorption;
• Age up to 16 years;
• Pregnancy;
• Hypersensitivity to any of the components which are a part of drug.

With care:

• Disease Krone;
• Jaundice (in the anamnesis including);
• Diseases of biliary tract and liver;
• Lactation.

Route of administration and dosage

Postinor should be accepted inside. In total it is necessary to take 2 pill within 72 hours after sexual contact, at the same time the second tablet – in 12-16 hours after reception of the first.

For achievement of effect drug needs to be accepted as soon as possible after sexual intercourse (no later than 72 hours after it).

In case of vomiting within 3 hours after any of receptions of tablets it is necessary to take an additional pill.

Side effects

• Passing undesirable reactions (do not demand drug treatment): often (more than in 10% of cases) – pains in the bottom of a stomach, fatigue, acyclic bloody allocations (bleedings), nausea; sometimes (less than in 10% of cases) – morbidity of mammary glands, a headache, dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, a periods delay (in case of a delay more than 5-7 days it is necessary to exclude pregnancy);
• Allergic reactions: rash, itch, urticaria, face edema.

Special instructions

Postinor is intended only for an emergency contraception and should not be applied as a constant contraceptive method.

It must be kept in mind that this contraceptive does not protect from diseases, sexually transmitted.

It is necessary to accept Postinor after the unprotected sexual intercourse as soon as possible as on the expiration of time its efficiency decreases (%):

• Less than 24 hours – 95%;
• 25-48 hours – 85%;
• 49-72 hours – 58%.

Drug can be used in any day of a menstrual cycle, but if a cycle irregular, before reception of a contraceptive it is necessary to exclude pregnancy. Before the following periods it is necessary to apply local barrier contraceptives (for example, a cervical cap or condom). Repeated use of Postinor (after the second unprotected sexual contact) during one menstrual cycle is not recommended as the frequency of acyclic bloody allocations or bleedings increases.

Drug, as a rule, does not influence the current of a menstrual cycle, however the periods delay for several days and emergence of acyclic bloody allocations is possible. At a delay more than 5-7 days or change of character of periods (plentiful or scanty allocations) it is necessary to exclude pregnancy. Pains in the bottom of a stomach and unconscious states can demonstrate development of an extrauterine pregnancy.

Postinor can be applied by teenagers up to 16 years only in exceptional cases (for example, after rape) after obligatory consultation at the gynecologist.

At dysfunction of the alimentary system decrease in efficiency of drug is possible.

Influence of levonorgestrel on the speed of reactions and ability to concentration of attention was not studied.

Medicinal interaction

The drugs which are inductors of enzymes of a liver accelerate levonorgestrel metabolism.

The following medicines can reduce efficiency of Postinor: drugs of the St. John's Wort which is made a hole такролимус, окскарбазепин, топирамат, not Virapinum, третиноин, лансопразол, amprekavit, barbiturates, including Primidonum, Phenytoinum and carbamazepine, tetracycline, ритонавир, рифабутин, ampicillin, griseofulvin, rifampicin.

Levonorgestrel increases plasma concentration of glucocorticosteroids, reduces efficiency of anticoagulants (derivative coumarin, Fenindionum) and hypoglycemic drugs. Women who accept these means before use of Postinor need to consult with the doctor.

Levonorgestrel suppresses cyclosporine metabolism owing to what increases risk of its toxicity.

Terms and storage conditions

To store in the place, unavailable to children, with observance of temperature condition from 15 to 25 ºС.

Period of validity – 5 years.
