Artificial ankylosis (arthrodesis; Greek arthron – the joint relating to a joint + Greek desis – binding) – surgery on fixing of a joint in a standard position.

Allocate the following types of an artificial ankylosis:

  • Extra intra joint (extraintraarticularis) – operation at which the extraarticular artificial ankylosis is combined with removal of a joint cartilage;
  • Extraarticular (extraarticularis) – the artificial ankylosis which is carried out by means of a bone transplant which becomes stronger on a bone on both sides of a joint, or by means of compression devices;
  • Intra joint (intraarticularis) – the artificial ankylosis which is carried out with removal of a cartilage from joint surfaces with the subsequent comparison of the last and an immobilization of a joint (as a rule, compression devices or pins) before achievement of its anchylosis;
  • Combined (combinata) – a combination of an intra joint artificial ankylosis to a tendinous myoplasty;
  • Compression (compressiva) – the artificial ankylosis which is carried out by a compression of joint surfaces by means of special devices (compression devices, etc.); the combination to a resection of a joint cartilage is possible.
