Cotton wool

Cotton wool (gossypium) – the laid by layers, friable mass of chaotically mixed synthetic or vegetable fibers; in medicine it is applied mainly as a dressing material.

Types of cotton wool:

  • Hygienic – the purified cotton made from grade cotton-fiber V used for female hygienic packages and to that similar;
  • Hygroscopic (hygroscopicum) – the cotton wool which is easily absorbing water, fat-free;
  • Hygroscopic antiseptic (hygroscopicum antisepticum) – a purified cotton, impregnirovanny (impregnated) with corrosive sublimate, an iodoform, or other antibacterial agents;
  • Eye – the purified cotton made from grade cotton-fiber I in which the highest absorbing capacity and a capillarity is inherent;
  • Collodion (colloidale; synonym: collodion cotton) – the cotton wool used for production of a collodion is mix mono - di - and cellulose trinitrates;
  • Compresseal – the cotton wool produced from grade cotton-fiber V-VI with addition of cotton lint; it is used as soft laying and in the warming compresses;
  • Styptic (haemostaticum) – a purified cotton, which an impregnirovanna iron trichloride;
  • Surgical (chirurgicum) – the purified cotton made of grade cotton-fiber III; is one of the main dressing materials;
  • Cellulose (cellulosum) – the cotton wool consisting of the fluffed-up cellulose and mix of fibers of cotton.
