Sodium silicate
Sodium silicate (liquid glass, E550 nutritional supplement) is represented by salts of acids of silicon. For the first time liquid 
glass in 1818 was received by the German chemist Yang Nepomuk von Fuchs. This connection is very eurysynusic in the nature. Silicates contain in one third of all known mineral connections (in clay materials, field spars, mica).
General properties of liquid glass
Sodium silicate – white or whitish finely divided powder without a certain taste and a smell. Liquid glass, being dissolved in water, forms viscous solution. In weak solutions sodium silicate breaks up to anions of silicon acid and cations of sodium. During removal of water solution of sodium silicate turns into an amorphous solid. Under the influence of chlorides and acids silica gel (sorbent) is formed of solution of liquid glass.
Viscous solutions of sodium silicate when heating to temperature of 200-300 °C distend and increase in volume by five-eight times.
Receiving sodium silicate
Now liquid glass is received by a processing method in the autoclave of the raw materials containing silicon dioxide, strong solutions of sodium of hydroxide. Also the methods of receiving sodium silicate based on crystallization of fusions from glasses, sedimentation from a gas phase and solutions are known.
Use of liquid glass
In the food industry E550 nutritional supplement is applied to prevention of caking and balling up of foodstuff at production of baking products, powdered milk, granulated sugar and other powdery products and food raw materials.
Liquid glass 
is added to soap, and also used at production of powders and washing pastes. This substance is quite often applied in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic industry at production of shadows, friable powders and powders. Synthetic sintezirovannoyezhidky glass is included in composition of adsorbents, solid lubricants, and also used by production of slags, cement, concrete and refractory materials. E550 additive is used as a filler in industrial production of paints, papers, rubbers, varnishes.
Harm of sodium silicate
Specialists of a number of the states found proofs of possible harm of E550 nutritional supplement. For this reason now in some countries it is forbidden to apply sodium silicate as nutritional supplement.
Therefore it is especially important to limit consumption of products with E550 nutritional supplement at tendency to an allergy, digestive disturbances, and also at children's age and at chronic diseases.
