Spermaceti – the wax-like substance used for production of various cosmetics having medicinal properties.

Pharmacological action

Wax-like substance spermaceti is formed as a result of cooling of liquid animal fat, so-called sperm oil which is extracted from the head of a cachalot or some other cetacea. From oil spermaceti crystallizes, forming the plates brilliant, fat to the touch which do not have taste and a smell. Spermaceti quickly hardens on air and forms soft yellowish wax-like weight. Cetyl palmitate, the main component of spermaceti, is compound of palmitic acid and ester of cetyl alcohol. In addition, at spermaceti there are some free alcohols – octadecyl, cetyl and eykozilovy.

Thanks to the properties spermaceti was long since used for preparation of creams and ointments. According to some historical documents, spermaceti was one of the components which are a part of the first creams. Till seventieth years of the 20th century it was actively used both in perfumery, and in preparation of antiburn ointments as spermaceti has wound healing properties.

Due to prohibition of production of cachalots, spermaceti as a part of creams and ointments most often is replaced with cetyl palmitate or kitalany, and sometimes beeswax, oil jojoba, lanolin or cocoa butter.

The spermaceti entering in cream (in the form of a kitalan or cetyl palmitate) renders the antiinflammatory, regenerating, softening, wound healing and cooling action, and also promotes formation of a gentle homogeneous consistence of cosmetics.

In spite of the fact that киталан synthesize artificially, it has practically all properties characteristic of animal spermaceti. In some cases it can be used for treatment of insignificant burns and cuts.

Form of production of Spermaceti

Kitalan replacing natural spermaceti in cosmetic creams release in the form of a firm waxy product of a homogeneous consistence of light yellow or cream color.

The synthesized spermaceti substitute – cetyl palmitate or киталан as the fatty basis is a part of cosmetic and medical creams of various manufacturing firms: DiaCosmetics, Iris Cosmetic, "The Siberian health", Christina, Belita-Viteks, Annemarie Borlind, TianDe, Green mama and some other.

Indications to Spermaceti use

Cosmetics on the basis of the synthesized spermaceti, as a rule, are intended for daily leaving. Containing substitute of animal spermaceti of cream promote:

To elimination of feeling of tightness and xeroderma;
To increase in protective functions of skin;
To recovery of elasticity of skin;
To the prevention of formation of wrinkles.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated to apply the containing substitutes of spermaceti of cream at the existing hypersensitivity to the components which are a part of cosmetics.

Side effects of Spermaceti

At the existing predisposition, cosmetic cream with spermaceti can cause some allergic reactions which are most often shown as skin rash and an itch.

Storage conditions

Kitalan as the main substitute of spermaceti, at a temperature of storage up to 50 °C, keeps the properties long enough. The cosmetics containing the synthesized spermaceti do not demand special storage conditions. The period of validity depends on the producer and, as a rule, varies from 6 months to 3 years.
