Sulfalene – antimicrobic synthetic drug of a broad spectrum of activity.

Pharmacological action

Active component of Sulfalene has antibacterial effect concerning gram-positive and gram-negative cocci, and also concerning Actinomyces spp., Chlamydia spp., Plasmodium and Toxoplasma gondii.Упаковка Сульфалена

The bacteriostatic effect rendered by active agent of Sulfalene differs in bigger duration in comparison with many other antibiotic drugs.

The mechanism of action is caused by disturbance of synthesis of dihydrofolic acid which participates in synthesis of pyrimidines and purines.

Form of production of Sulfalene

Sulfalene is produced in the form of tablets on 200 mg.

In the form of solution for intravenous and intramuscular administration produce the drug Sulfalen-Meglyumin. In ampoules on 5 ml containing 0,5 g of active agent.

Sulfalene analogs on the mechanism of action are the drugs Sulfadimethoxine and Sulfapyridazinum.

Indications to Sulfalene use

According to the instruction in a prepar appoint for treatment of infectious diseases which cause microorganisms, sensitive to effect of Sulfalene, namely:

  • Purulent infections of various localization – abscesses, wound fevers, mastitis;
  • Infections of a respiratory organs – bronchitis, pneumonia;
  • Diseases of urinary tract – cystitis, a pyelitis, an urethritis;
  • Diseases of biliary tract – a cholangitis, cholecystitis.

Sulfalene is also applied at treatment of osteomyelitis, otitis, sinusitis and toxoplasmosis.

Besides, Sulfalene is effective as a part of a combination therapy for treatment of malaria (especially at the forms showing resistance to monotherapy).

Intravenous administration of Sulfalene is shown for prevention of complications of a bacterial infection during the postoperative period and at various forms of purulent infections in urological, neurosurgical, surgical and gynecologic practice. Also drug is appointed at inefficiency of other chemotherapeutic drugs in cases of diseases of pneumonia, purulent meningitis and in serious septic conditions.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated to use the drug Sulfalene at:

  • Hypersensitivity;
  • Chronic renal failure;
  • Porphyrias;
  • Pregnancies;
  • Oppression of a marrowy hemopoiesis;
  • Inborn deficit glyukozo-6-fosfatdegidrogenazy;
  • Azotemias.

At diseases of kidneys which are not followed by disturbances of secretory function Sulfalene is appointed, as a rule, with care.

Sulfalene is rather slowly removed from an organism therefore exceeding of the appointed doses can lead to its accumulation in an organism.

Sulfalene route of administration

The dosage and duration of use of Sulfalene and analogs according to the instruction depends on disease degree of manifestation.

So, at sharply proceeding diseases, in the first day of treatment appoint 1 g of Sulfalene once a day then for 7-10 days accept 200 mg of drug a day.Сульфадиметоксин - аналог Сульфалена

For carrying out long профилактик, and also at treatment of the persistent and current infections having long character, Sulfalene according to the instruction is accepted once a week on 2 g.

Usually similar therapy is carried out at diseases of kidneys and urinary tract, and also at treatment of rheumatism and chronic diseases of lungs. As a rule, treatment in these cases long – up to one and a half months.

For achievement of the maximum effect it is necessary to take Sulfalene not earlier than for half an hour to food.

Parenteral administration of Sulfalene is in certain cases shown: intravenously (struyno or kapelno) or intramusculary. Usually the drug is administered once a day.

In the first days the standard dosage makes 5 ml, and at severe forms of a disease – to 10 ml. In the next 7-10 days Sulfalene is entered on 200 mg.

Sulfalene and analogs are not effective at treatment of dysentery.

Side effects

At use of Sulfalene can develop:

  • Headache;
  • Leukopenia;
  • Crystalluria;
  • The dyspepsia including nausea and vomiting;
  • Agranulocytosis;
  • Allergic reactions.

Development of a leukopenia, agranulocytosis and other undesirable actions of system of a hemopoiesis is promoted by simultaneous use of Sulfalene with thioacetazone, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and chloramphenicol.

The undesirable side effects connected with a drug gematotoksichnost strengthen miyelotoksichny medicines.

Medicinal interaction of Sulfalene

Sulfalene at simultaneous use with lincomycin, erythromycin, Fusidinum, novobiocin, levorinum and tetracyclines mutually strengthens antibacterial action.

Antagonism is observed at combined use with:

  • Penicillin;
  • Streptomycin and other aminoglycosides;
  • Rifamycinum;
  • Acidum nalidixicum.

Simultaneous use of Sulfalene with Oxacillinum can lead to toxicity strengthening.

Antibacterial activity of drug is suppressed by benzocaine, Procainum and pantocain.

Also it is necessary to consider that use of Sulfalene reduces reliability of oral contraceptives.

Storage conditions

Sulfalene belongs to a number of antibiotic drugs of the list B which issue from drugstores is possible according to the recipe. The period of storage of tablets should not exceed four years, solution – no more than two years.
