Amnesia

Amnesia (amnesia; Greek amnesia – memory loss, forgetfulness) – one of memory disturbances which is shown in the form of loss of ability to keep and reproduce knowledge acquired earlier.

Allocate the following types of amnesia:

  • Anterograde (amnesia anterograda; lat. anterius – to, before + gradior – to go) – amnesia on events which took place directly upon termination of a disease mental state or disorder of consciousness;
  • Anteroretrogradny (amnesia anteroretrograda; lat. anterius – to, before + retro – behind + gradior – to go) – amnesia on events which preceded a disease mental state or disorder of consciousness, and also followed it;
  • Autogipnoticheskaya (amnesia autohypnotica) – the term applied in psychoanalysis to designation of amnesia on experiences or events which arose because of their subconscious replacement;
  • Katatimny (amnesia catathymica; Greek katathymeo – to despond, lose courage) – amnesia only on certain events and faces;
  • Kongradny (amnesia congrada; lat. the con-prefix – jointly, together with + gradior – to go) – amnesia on some period which corresponds to the period of a disease mental state or disorder of consciousness;
  • Negativistichny – amnesia which is caused by the internal resistance of the person to reproduction of separate events, the facts, etc.;
  • Posthypnotic (amnesia posthypnotica) – amnesia for the images, events and representations which arose during hypnosis; comes after the corresponding suggestion;
  • Progressing (amnesia progressiva) – the amnesia extending consistently from knowledge acquired later to received earlier;
  • Retardirovanny (amnesia retardata) – amnesia for a disease mental state or disorder of consciousness which comes after its termination only after a while;
  • Retrograde (amnesia retrograda; lat. retro – behind + gradior – to go) – amnesia on events which preceded a disease mental state or disorder of consciousness;
  • Fixating – amnesia on recent and current events at the kept memory on knowledge acquired earlier;
  • Incidental (synonym: amnesia periodic) – the amnesia coming repeatedly on limited periods.
