Appendix [appendix vermiformis – PNA (The anatomic nomenclature Parisian); processus vermiformis – BNA (The anatomic nomenclature Basel), JNA (The anatomic nomenclature Yenskaya); lat. appendix – an appendage; synonym: a worm-shaped shoot] – a short worm-shaped shoot of 7-10 cm which departs from a medial surface of a caecum and is an outgrowth of its wall. The mucous membrane of an appendix contains accumulation of lymphatic follicles.
