Potassium permanganate
Application instruction:
Potassium permanganate – antiseptic drug for external and topical administration.
Form of release and structure
Dosage form – powder for preparation of solution for external use: crystals or crystal small powder of red or dark-violet color with metal gloss (on 3, 5 or 15 g in packages, banks or bottles, in a cardboard pack of 1 piece; on 3, 5 or 15 g in the packages thermowelded in a cardboard pack of 10 packages; on 15 g in plastic bags, in a cardboard pack 1 package; on 3 or 5 g in test tubes glass, in a cardboard pack 1 test tube).
Active agent – potassium permanganate.
Indications to use
Use of drug is shown for washing of wounds, burns, ulcers; syringings and washings in urology and gynecology; gastric lavages in case of poisoning with the alkaloids accepted inside (including morphine, aconitine) or phosphorus.
Contraindications
Therapeutic use of drug is contraindicated to patients with hypersensitivity to potassium to permanganate.
Route of administration and dosage
Solution of powder is used outwardly and locally.
The recommended concentration of solutions of drug:
- Washing of wounds: 0,1-0,5%;
- Rinsing of a throat: 0,01-0,1%;
- Greasing of burn and ulcer surfaces: 2-5%;
- Syringing and washing (in urological and gynecologic practice): 0,02-0,1%;
- Gastric lavage: 0,02-0,1%.
Side effects
At strong concentration of solution use of Potassium of permanganate can cause side effects in the form of damage of surrounding fabrics.
Special instructions
At external use even insignificant concentration of solution is capable to paint skin in brown color.
Intake of high-strong solution of potassium of permanganate causes organism intoxication which symptoms and an effect can become: nausea and vomiting with brownish impurity, swelled, brown coloring and corrosion of a mucous membrane of a mouth, injury of a liver and kidneys, gastrointestinal bleeding, oppression of action of the heart.
It is impossible to use Potassium permanganate as drug for abortion as such procedure is accompanied by big health hazard and the pregnant woman's lives. At introduction to a vagina high-strong solution causes a deep burn, perforation of a wall of a vagina, severe bleeding, peritonitis, a vascular collapse.
